Winterizing Your Outdoor Space: A Nanaimo Guide

Nanaimo winters aren't freezing cold, but they are relentlessly wet. Constant moisture combined with organic debris (leaves, needles) is the recipe for rot, mold, and algae growth. Taking a few hours in late October to prep your space can save you thousands in repairs come spring.

1. The Deep Clean

Before the rains set in, sweep thoroughly. Debris trapped between boards acts as a sponge, keeping joists permanently wet. Wash the deck surface to remove summer pollen and food spills, which are food sources for mold.

2. Furniture Strategy

Don't leave cushions out, even if they claim to be 'weatherproof'. In our climate, they will mildew. Store cushions indoors. For frames (metal/wicker), buy high-quality breathable covers. If you have space, stack chairs in a shed or garage.

3. Potted Plant Elevation

Pot feet are your best friend. Never leave a heavy planter sitting directly on wood or composite decking all winter. Moisture gets trapped underneath, causing distinct ring-shaped rot or discoloration. Raise them up on 'pot feet' or wheeled dollies to allow airflow underneath.

4. Gutter Management

Check the gutters directly above your deck. If they overflow, they will dump concentrated gallons of water onto one specific spot of your deck, causing premature wear and erosion. Ensure downspouts are directed away from deck footings.

5. BBQ Prep

You might still BBQ in winter! Move your grill closer to the door for easy access. Clean the grease trap thoroughly (grease attracts pests seeking winter shelter). Invest in a heavy-duty cover to prevent rust from salt air.
